“Is that real?” Katie asked.
“Are you asking if it’s real or if it’s live?”
“Either?” She gave me a sideways look. “Who are we and where are we? Actual, living, light blue rabbits are not out of the realm of possibility. Neither would be animated plushies.”

My words barely louder than a breath, I said, “She’s a vampire.”
His voice the same as mine, Ben said, “She’s a witch.” “She’s a vampire,” I insisted. I realized Ben was not refuting what I said, just adding his own knowledge. “She’s a witch.” "Bewitched Bikers" |
“How did you do that?” Julie asked, as if I somehow had the magic to make a vase of formerly vibrant, high-quality and not-inexpensive, silk flowers turn brown and wilt.
“What fresh hell is this?” I muttered.
“Aren’t those fake?” My other sister Karen appeared behind us, carrying a small gift bag.
“Yes.”
We all stared at the flowers, as I moved them to an empty space on the bookshelf.
“Maybe this is one of those spooky things that happen on holidays,” Julie suggested.
“My birthday is not a holiday,” I protested.

I said, “The wicked Witch of the East is leading a bunch of blind followers toward a haunted house where her sister is.”
Lem suggested, “If the Witch of the East was directing bats, people, or whatever to the East, then maybe the witch of the North wants to direct whoever—" “Blind creatures,” Teri murmured. “—To the north.” “What is north of here?” Katie asked. ~ "Witch Direction" |
As I started back the way we had come, Julie whispered to me, “Helen you need to relax. It's not like no one knows that we're here. And we have cell phones.”
“Do we have any reception out here?” I asked. Julie looked at her phone. “Well, no, we don't.” “Stop thinking about every movie you've ever seen where people are lost or trapped in cornfields,” Karen said. ~ "A-Mazing Ghosts" |
“So, tell us about this interesting history that the barn has,” Tarria said, as we were setting up, arranging and decorating our sections of the barn. Because of the big, open space, we were able to converse easily.
Clive answered, “It's not terribly unusual things. It burned to the ground twice.”
Everyone froze in what they were lifting, carrying, or setting down.
