Before Daylight
Having faced danger together and become more than friends, Helen and Patrick understand that nothing between them will ever be simple. Once again, together they must deal with ordinary, human evil and not-so-ordinary evil of a not-so-human variety.
"I knew it wouldn't be over,"he said. "I knew my staying here would keep you in danger."
The trouble starts with a visit from the family of a woman found murdered near Helen's home several years before; a person who wants to prove one of Helen's dear neighbors is responsible. The discovery of illegal activity on other local property puts everyone around at risk of serious legal trouble.
"If Lem gets arrested for this, I will swear that I did it, and I need
you to back me up on this."
Stewart was shocked at the idea, but nodded.
"You are with me on this?" I asked. "We have to protect Lem."
"Yes,ma'am," he said, looking anxious. "What do we do now?"
Distracted by her neighbors' problems, which quickly become her own, Helen is slow to realize that her sister's new boyfriend is much worse than a bad date...
"What does he do to make people not remember details about him?"
"He doesn't do it on purpose," Patrick said."It just happens."
He looked at me, deciding what and how much to tell me,knowing it
would add to my already overwhelming fear for my sister.
